Hydroelectric Power Explained:

A dam is constructed to block the flow of a water source, like a river, resulting in the formation of a reservoir. This reservoir stores water at an elevated height, giving it potential energy due to gravity.

When the stored water is released from the reservoir, it flows down through a tunnel in the dam known as the penstock. As it descends, the potential energy of the stored water is transformed into kinetic energy due to its movement.

This rushing water then strikes and turns turbines. The kinetic energy of the moving water is transferred to the turbines, which in turn spin generators.

These generators then convert the kinetic energy into electrical energy. Finally, transformers adjust the electricity's voltage, making it suitable for direct consumption by customers or for interconnection to the power grid.
